Sweet Home Chicken (SHC)
About This Spot
Stepping into Sweet Home Chicken (SHC) is like finding a little gem tucked away in North Portland—a casual, no-frills takeout spot where the simple joy of sharing a comforting meal takes center stage. The pace here is unhurried yet lively, a gentle hum of friendly exchanges between staff and regulars that turns waiting for your order into a moment of genuine connection rather than a chore.
The atmosphere carries a laid-back neighborhood charm, with an approachable vibe that invites both students looking for a satisfying, hearty meal and families craving a taste of something familiar yet thoughtfully curated. It’s the kind of place where the warmth isn’t just from the food but from the kindness that comes through the counter and the way every order is packed with care.
At Sweet Home Chicken, the experience is rooted in the vibrant flavors of Korean-style fried chicken that balance crispiness and tenderness with a thoughtful play of sauces—from sweet and spicy to tangy soy lemon—that feel both bold and comforting. Pairing the main dishes with fresh, crisp sides like pickled daikon creates a refreshing counterpoint that makes each bite feel balanced and lively. And then there are the imaginative touches—like pistachio bubble tea or creamy horchata boba—that hint at the owners’ playful spirit, turning a takeout run into a small celebration of flavors and textures.
What lingers most is not just the food, but the unpretentious way it’s served: ample portions that satisfy without overwhelming, flavors that delight without overstating, and a quiet promise that you can come back time after time and always find something familiar yet fresh. This is a space for the everyday moments when good food and a kind welcome make all the difference.

I go here very often. I'm a college student and I must say the portions are really good for the price. It's also incredibly tasty

Wow, this is insanely good! It’s completely packed with boneless chicken, and every piece is perfectly coated in sauce. Personally, I love their pink pickled radish It tastes so fresh and makes everything feel really refreshing! The staff are also really kind and welcoming We found this place while we were just passing by, but I’d definitely come back!

The standard on food here is high! I had to see what this place was all about; Not just any Fried Chicken and Corn dogs but Korean Style! Everything was flavorful and crispy. Especially impress with the fries, salted just right. The owners are friendly and the place felt comfortable. Too bad not in a great location.

Recently chicken been on my mind. My sainted mother, a powerhouse from the south was renowned for her fried chicken and as I grow old, my heart leads my mind back to family dinners and the best fried chicken in the land. Family get togethers were referred to as shouting and desert, and were as full of joy as a cannoli is full of sweet rich filling. So I do a search and up pops Sweet Home Chicken. Boy! Things have changed in my old neighborhood! Maybe if places like this had existed when I was there, we wouldn’t have moved to the wastelands of Vancouver. But to business! The server seemed a little shy at first, I am odd looking and old and a little deaf (who knew that would happen), but when I asked questions about the menu, she was welcoming and patient. This is always a huge part of the puzzle for me. You can serve me the best food in town but if the staff is rude or condescending then the food will taste bad to me. But Sweet Home Chicken unlocked the secrets of the menu and I got the Lemon Soy Popcorn chicken with a slightly spicy sauce on the side. I loved the lemon wheel in the box, it reminded me of the great wheel of life, the celestial circle, turned by angles and telling you of life’s secrets. The popcorn chicken was flavorful and crispy, the chicken inside well seasoned, moist, and tender. I liked the dipping sauce which they told me was spicy but just has a nice little kick. Next time I might bump things up regarding spice, I’m old and my stomach is more fragile than it used to be, but spice can be nice. I had it with a side of rice which mixed well with the sauce for a final mop up. And let us not forget the pickled daikon, which was bright and sweet and crunchy. I think made fresh in house. It reminded me of the years I lived in Asia, pickled sides are a part of life there. This is the kind of place that you put on your list and if you live in the area becomes a favorite drop in place, or the spot where your spouse says, Drop by and pick up some popcorn chicken on the way home. For me it’s Drop by and pick up a little nostalgia on the way home and that makes coming home a bit more special. Sweet Home Chicken is one of those places that land in a neighborhood like a dropped seed and starts putting down roots and producing flowers or fruits and pretty soon feels like it has always been there. You know, it grows into the community and brings a taste of faraway places and new concepts and pretty soon we are all a little closer to the world. 5 outa 5! You can wear your overalls and your hard hat, or you can drop in with a date. Pretty soon you’re a regular.

Absolutely amazing! The food was a decent portion - enough for 3 people. My friends and I got 2 of the popcorn chicken meal, one sweet spicy hot and the other lemon soy chicken. Both were amazing and the flavors hit just right!! The sweet spicy had a little kick while the lemon soy wasn’t too salty either. The popcorn chicken was still crispy after a couple of hours! 10/10 would definitely come again :))

This place is so good. I come a minimum of 2-3 times a month. I get the prime sweet hot spicy chicken meal. It comes with crispy chicken (that actually stays crispy when you get it to-go or have leftovers!) sauced in a fantastic sweet and spicy sauce, a side of the “prime” sauce (which is like a garlic ranch), delicious picked daikon and purple rice. It’s always packaged so beautifully and the staff are all very nice, you can tell they care about the product they serve.

I stumbled upon this place driving through north Portland and decided to stop on a whim. I feel like I hit the lottery because it’s everything one could ask for from a family owned chicken spot. They’re hands down my favorite chicken spot. I’ve been back a few times, had different menu items, and it’s never not been exceptional. The chicken is always fresh steaming hot and perfectly coated in one of their many delicious sauces and spices (my favorite is sweet hot spicy but the sweet soy lemon is phenomenal too). Bone in or boneless doesn’t matter they both are great and it really comes down to personal preference when making that choice. The service is always kind and prompt and you can tell from the way food is packaged to go that the quality and freshness of the food is paramount. It does have a small simple dining room to eat in if you’d rather dine in. A selfish part of me wants to keep this hidden gem a secret but this chicken is too good not to share and ensure this business sees success and the owners are rewarded for doing such a wonderful job.

Chefs kiss this food is amaze-balls! I come here about once every other month and it has always been consistently great. Texture, flavor, portion, service all of it is phenomenal. I have never had chicken like this before SHC. The price is reasonable, not cheap, but fair! The parking can be a little tight but ive always been able to get a decent spot. The lady is so kind. The K dogs with cheese are soo good. I always come back for the same stuff but next time im going to try some wings. I absolutely recommend this place, come eat and relax. They do have a indoor dining area, would be good for a quick date or meeting, or solo lunch/dinner. Bottled soda was a little expensive but thats everywhere now a days.
